Researchers recently examined the health records of over 600,000 children between the ages of 6 and 19. The study revealed that children who were overweight were 1.16 times more likely to develop asthma compared to children who were of a normal weight. Moderately obese children were 1.23 times more likely to develop the condition, and extremely obese children were 1.37 times more at risk. With this knowledge, health care providers must work to develop programs to prevent asthma in high-risk groups. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are currently 7.1 million children in the United States suffering from asthma. American Journal of Epidemiology, August 2013
